Tesco’s recent decision to amend the pay and conditions of long-serving staff has sparked tension, and the threat of industrial action if the company implements the plans is almost certain to be carried out.
Tesco has today denied reports that it will meet union representatives at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) today, stating that they are still waiting for a date to meet with staff representatives.
According to company sources, 700 long-serving staff have accepted a voluntary redundancy package.
The company said: “Feedback from our colleagues was that the voluntary redundancy offer was generous and fair. Over 70% of our pre-1996 colleagues have now accepted voluntary redundancy.
“We continue to focus on implementing this change for our remaining pre-1996 colleagues which takes effect from 16 May and will continue to engage colleagues on this issue in advance of this date.”
