An Irishman suffering from a terrible insect bite and confined to a Thai hospital is scheduled to return home, reports The Mirror.

James Burke, 26, of Limerick, received “the best Christmas present” according to his family.

The strain of paying his €2,700-per-day medical bill was shared by his family, who also contributed €93,337 to cover the cost of his €176,000 air ambulance.

But when James’s health worsened, they worried that the deficit might be too great. However, health officials have now promised to return him home.

His sister Josie told the Irish Mirror: “We’re hoping he’ll get home for next week, but it won’t be in time for Christmas Day. He’s due back in Ireland on December 28, if all goes well,” reports The Mirror.

Josie added: “He has been very upset in Thailand, being alone all this time. He was saying he could not stay another day. We are very lucky James will be coming home in the air ambulance,” reports The Mirror.
