Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken the $1 billion mark in record time.
The seventh instalment in the franchise went beyond the $1bn mark in the world box office and reached the milestone in record speed.
JJ Abrams’ seventh film in the sci-fi fairytale saga reached the milestone in 12 days, overtaking the 13 days it took Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World to get there in June.
The film has surpassed expectations and is currently placing at No.15 on the all-time global box office list, The Force Awakens is on target to zoom past leaders Avatar ($2.8 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion) and Jurassic World ($1.6 billion) in world box office takings.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens had the biggest opening weekend in Ireland and also UK box office history. The film took in an estimated €13.15 million on its opening day, with the one day take in Ireland bringing in a massive €836,845.
