It’s understood that several people who attended 1916 Commemorations parades in Northern Ireland this past Easter weekend have made complaints about the force used by the PSNI.
One attendee claims “The PSNI were heavy-handed and used batons. There really was no need for it”.
Violence broke out in Derry City today as the PSNI attempted to stop a 1916 Rebellion commemoration parade.
This Easter Sunday had witnessed a baton charge by the PSNI on a 1916 commemoration parade conducted by Republican Sinn Fein in Lurgan which left several injured including an elderly woman.
Six people were arrested and faces charges of taking part in an illegal procession and wearing clothing associated with a banned organization.
A parade organised by The Derry 1916 Committee, that had not notified the Parade Commission, in the Cregan area of the city, also saw an attempt by the PSNI to intervene and detain those taking part.
However, the PSNI were met with a hail of petrol bombs, bricks and other missiles and violence persisted for two hours following the attempted intervention.
No arrests are reported as having been made at this time.
