The rise of the rodents: Family forced to evacuate their home after finding 19 rats running amok at the property

In scenes reminiscent of James Herbert’s Lair, a Belfast family were forced to flee their property after finding 19 rats marauding around their house.

The property, located at Rutland Street, off Belfast’s Ormeau Road, had been completely overrun by pests while the family were on holidays.

A dantesque scene of utter desolation greeted the family upon opening the door. Wiring had been gnawed upon, furniture had been scratched, and rat spoor littered the residence.

After fleeing for their lives, the family, which includes two young children, sought shelter with friends.

A Belfast City Council spokesman said: “Our environmental health officers and pest control team are aware of the ongoing rat problem at the property on Rutland Street.

“We are working closely with the Housing Executive to resolve the issue to ensure that the property is made habitable again.”
