The world may see a new arms race in the near future, as the US Administration announced on Friday that the country will no longer abide by a historic nuclear arms control treaty signed over 30 years ago.
The 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was signed at the White House by the then leaders of the United States and Soviet Union Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. The treaty aimed to eliminate all land-based ballistic and cruise missiles, effectively curtailing the proliferation of such weapons and the threat they posed to world peace.
The US is now pulling out of the agreement, prompting Russian leader Vladimir Putin to do likewise. The move is now likely to kickstart a new arms race that may destabilize the already precarious peace between Eastern and Western powers.
