They haven’t a clue: Large numbers of gardai investigating serious crime lack training in ‘core investigative skills’, new review says

An assessment conducted by a statutory watchdog found that many gardaĆ­ who investigate severe crimes are not trained in “core investigative skills,” reports Breaking News.

Regarding garda procedures and structures in combating transnational organised crime, the Garda SƭochƔna Inspectorate has issued 68 suggestions.

According to the watchdog’s conclusions, which were released on Tuesday, An Garda SĆ­ochĆ”na does not have a transnational organised crime plan or an organised crime strategy.

Furthermore, there is no strategic threat and risk assessment or plan for combating transnational organised crime on the island of Ireland developed by the Joint Agency Task Force, reports Breaking News.

The inspectorate discovered that while the volume of requests has greatly grown, the procedure for obtaining important evidence from other jurisdictions is cumbersome and sluggish.

At home, the lack of a formal platform for authorities to convene and exchange intelligence on organised crime is viewed as a vulnerability.

It went on to say that a large number of organised crime gang members still run their illicit businesses from prisons, reports Breaking News.

The inspectorate recommended the implementation of a domestic and international organised crime strategy in its conclusions.

The establishment of a national criminal intelligence framework was also suggested.

The monitoring committee recognised the “considerable success” of An Garda SĆ­ochĆ”na’s narcotics seizures and operations against prominent criminal organisations, reports Breaking News.
