A man who tried to kill a newborn baby by giving it prescription medicine in a bottle of milk has been thrown in jail.
Jamar Bailey, 21, was researching “how to poison a baby” and “how to kill a newborn baby” online, the BBC reports.
The three-week-old girl was hospitalized in June 2020 after becoming unresponsive and lifeless.
Bailey, from Birmingham City, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was jailed in city crown court for 25 and a half years.
A urine test from the infant revealed sodium valporate, a drug used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder, which can be fatal in newborns.
Hospital staff notified the police because they said the drug could not have been accidentally taken.
Police discovered Augustin Grove’s Bailey, Winson Green, was taking anti-seizure medication and a search revealed a prescription drug that contained sodium valporate in his own name.
Toxicology reports found evidence of the drug in the baby’s milk bottle.
West Midlands Police said she survived and was doing very well but it’s not known until she is older whether she suffered any long term effects, the force added.
Bailey pleaded guilty to attempted murder and a charge of possession with intent to supply.
