Missing hiker lost on US mountain ignored phone calls from rescuers because it was an “unknown number”

A man who was lost for 24 hours while hiking Colorado’s highest mountain ignored repeated calls from rescue teams because they were from an unknown number, authorities confirm.

The hiker was reported missing around 8pm on October 18th after failing to return to his lodgings for the night, the Lake County Search and Rescue Service say.

Repeated attempts to contact the man through phone calls, text messages and voicemail messages have been ignored, according to a statement released by the agency.

Five search and rescue teams were deployed but returned around 3am having failed to make any contact with the man. They went out again at 7:30am then morning only for the hiker to return at 9:30am to where he was staying.

Authorities were happy with the outcome but surprised at the man not answering their calls.
