Traveller jailed for stealing a designer jackets worth €12,000 from Brown Thomas




A 39-yr-old woman has been jailed for one year after she and her daughter pleaded guilty to stealing six designer jackets worth more than €12,000 from Brown Thomas in Dublin.

Cathriona Joyce and her daughter Caitlin Joyce, aged 21, both of St Brigid’s Lawn, Porterstown in Dublin, appeared before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court where they admitted to stealing the jackets, valued at €12,615, from the department store on 14 December 2024, reports Breaking News.

Garda Shane Quinn told the court that the two women were captured on CCTV behaving suspiciously on the same day the jackets went missing. He said three women and two men entered the store, loitered, and were placed under surveillance.

The women concealed the designer jackets beneath their own clothing and walked out, while the men carried the remaining jackets out under their arms, reports Breaking News.

Following the execution of search warrants at the Joyce women’s homes, three of the jackets were recovered.

One was found beneath a Christmas tree in the living room of Cathriona Joyce’s caravan, while two others were found in the bedroom of her daughter’s caravan in the same bay, reports Breaking News.

Four days after the incident, Cathriona Joyce handed a bag containing three further Moncler jackets in to gardaí, which were returned in good condition with their Brown Thomas labels and security tags still intact.

Judge Martin Nolan noted that Cathriona Joyce had previously received the benefit of suspended sentences from various courts for similar offences.

He sentenced her to one year in prison, reports Breaking News.

Turning to Caitlin Joyce, the judge noted that she had no previous convictions and was attempting to improve herself. He imposed a sentence of one year in prison but suspended it in full on condition she engage with the Probation Service, reports Breaking News.

She entered her bond but broke down in tears as her mother was led away to begin her custodial sentence, reports Breaking News.
