Tributes paid to 90 yr-old hero who died saving woman’s life in Cork crash

Cork is in mourning for a 90-yr-old man who lost his life attempting to save the life of a woman in a vehicle accident. At 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Cal O’Keeffe of Glanworth was hit by a car in a supermarket parking lot on Courthouse Road in Fermoy, reports The Mirror.

After the event, two more people—a lady in her 60s and the car’s driver, who was also in his 90s—need medical care.

Cal is said to have “may have saved her life” by pushing the woman out of the way of the car, according to witnesses. Former Cork County Mayor Frank O’Flynn concurs, reports The Mirror.

The woman was evacuated to CUH after suffering severe injuries. At the scene, Cal was pronounced dead.

The retired educator and farmer, who was once the principal of Glanworth’s St. Patrick’s National School, leaves behind his wife and four kids.

As they grieve the death of the well-known local who “loved life” and was “always in great form,” Cllr. O’Flynn described a “heavy cloud” over Fermoy and Glanworth, according to Cork Beo, reports The Mirror.

Cal’s long-time friend and neighbour, the previous County Mayor, stated: “It’s a very, very sad time for the community.” Cal always had a warm greeting for everyone he encountered and was an excellent parishioner. He loved life, had a large family, and was quite well-known in the community.

“It’s such a tragic incident for someone who was just going about their grocery shopping. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time, and with the other people who were injured in the incident,” reports The Mirror.
