It’s an unusual one but it seems to have worked for one young man who didn’t want to join the military

A 24-year-old Ukrainian man was accused of marrying his 81-year-old disabled cousin to escape military service. It is said that Alexander Kondratyuk married 57-year-old Zinaida Illarionovna to use the exemption from recruitment in the Ukraine. Military service in Ukraine is compulsory for physically capable male citizens between 18 and 26 years of age. However, if a man is responsible for the care of a disabled woman, he is exempt. The couple married in the village of Baykovka, near the town of Vinnitsa in western Ukraine on the shores of the Southern Beetle.

Mr. Kondratyuk denied marrying his cousin to be excused for military service and said he felt a strong affection for his new bride. He also insisted that he is a good husband who looks after her well, according to local media. However, neighbours said her husband was never seen in the area. One of them told a local television station that “her nephews, grandchildren and sisters visit her much more often than her husband.” She added that she lived alone in her home and that the only visible sign of marriage was the certificate she carried with her every time the selection committee arrived in the area to hire new recruits. The case is reportedly being investigated, but the army officials confirmed that they were not interested in investigating the matter so it looks like it worked pretty well!
