In line with his daughter Liz Cheney’s declaration this week, former Republican vice president Dick Cheney has said that he will support Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris over Republican former president Donald Trump in the US elections scheduled for November 5, 2018, reports RTE.

Next week, Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris will engage in a debate as they are in a fierce contest for the electoral vote.

Several Republicans, including numerous senior staff members of previous Presidents George HW Bush and George W. Bush, have lately backed Ms. Harris because they are angry about Mr. Trump’s influence over their party and his activities.

Under Republican President George W. Bush, Dick Cheney served as vice president from 2001 until 2009, reports RTE.

Human rights organisations have criticised him throughout the years because he was heavily involved in the planning of the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties and violations of human rights.

The daughter of the previous vice president, Republican former congressman Liz Cheney, has also been an outspoken opponent of the current Republican presidential candidate. She voiced her concerns, among other things, over the Trump supporters’ January 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol, reports RTE.

“In our nation’s 248-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” stated Dick Cheney yesterday.

“As citizens, we each have an obligation to put country above partisanship in order to protect our Constitution,” he continued. For this reason, I will vote for Kamala Harris, the vice president,” reports RTE.

The Harris campaign said that by endorsing Ms. Harris, the Cheneys had become part of “a growing movement of Republicans putting country over party”.

Mr. Trump used the term “irrelevant RINO”—which stands for “Republicans in Name Only”—to refer to the Cheneys in a social media post. The term is used to describe Republicans who do not support him, reports RTE.
