Two men, one from Ukraine, gets charged after €150 million cocaine seizure off Cork

Two men have been charged in connection with the seizure of more than €150 million worth of cocaine from a bulk carrier vessel off the coast of Cork earlier this week, reports RTE.

They are scheduled to appear in court today.

More than 2.2 tonnes of drugs were found on the MV Matthew, which was seized on Wednesday and is being tested in Cork Harbour.

Gardaí said the seizure was the biggest in the state’s history.

The men were pulled to safety from a trawler off the Wexford coast after the vessel capsized on Sunday evening, reports RTE.

The men, from the UK and Ukraine, were detained under the Organized Crime Act and questioned at Wexford Police Station.

After consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions, they were charged with conspiracy to import drugs.

They are due to appear at Wexford District Court today.

After the trawler floated away, a joint operation involving An Garda Síochána, Customs and the Defense Force intercepted the bulk carrier vessel MV Matthew off the coast of Cork, reports RTE.

Cocaine was discovered on board and five others from Iran, Ukraine and the Netherlands were arrested.

They can be interrogated for a maximum of seven days.
