UK Government is going to send a text to mobile phones as part of test of new emergency warning system

The UK Government is carrying out a test on mobile users next month, in the hope of developing a warning system that can be used into the future.

According to RTE, the test is due to be sent on Sunday 23rd April and will involve a text that is sent to mobile phones. It will involve an alert showing up on the home screen, accompanied by a loud warning noise and vibration. Users will have to acknowledge the alert or they will be unable to access other features on their devices.

Similar tests have been used in the US, Canada, the Netherlands and Japan and it is thought that it would be useful in situations like flooding and wildfires.

RTE reports that it is possible that the system could be used as an alert against terrorist attacks but officials have said that a lot more information would be needed before anything like this could be added.
