UK government rejects Brussels’ request for customs office to be used in Belfast

The UK government has refused a request from the EU to establish a customs office in Belfast which Brussels insists is necessary to ensure that Britain upholds its commitments as part of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and other trade deals with Brussels.

After the UK voted in the largest democratic exercise in its history to leave the EU, the bloc sought to utilise the situation in Ireland with the border between the North and the Republic to impede the country’s separation and make the transition as difficult as possible.

However, the government of Boris Johnson took the UK out of the EU last December without fully finalising a separation agreement and the EU is keen to see its now external border, which exists between the Republic and the North enforced.

The UK government, refusing the request to establish a Belfast office, instead suggested EU officials should travel directly from Europe to the porous and usually rural border in Ireland.
