UK schools issue statement warning parents of danger of Momo game and similar “challenges”

A number of schools and institutions across the United Kingdom have posted alerts on their social media pages, warning parents of the ‘highly inappropriate’ videos connected to the so-called “challenge” or “game” called Momo.

Many tech experts say that the game is indeed just an internet rumour that got feet of its own, but others fear that whether it’s real or not, similar “games” could start and parents have been urged to keep a watchful eye on their child’s internet activity.

According to the Parentzone website, the Momo Challenge is played over WhatsApp, with the Momo character asking would-be participants to contact ‘her’ and carry out a series of challenges – the final one being suicide.

Last week, in a public announcement, Gardai say parents should monitor their children’s online activities as the challenge has seen a rise in recent weeks.

It is understood the sick challenge encourages teenagers and young children to carry out a number of dangerous challenges including acts of self harm.

Gardai say the game is targeting youngsters on a number of different social media platforms and children as young as seven have been targeted.
