UN issues ‘red alert’ as climate records broken last year as activists promise more protests

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has reported that every significant global climate record was broken in 2018, with its chief executive officer expressing particular alarm about ocean temperatures and declining sea ice, reports RTE.

In its yearly State of the Global Climate report, the UN meteorological office stated that average temperatures reached 1.45 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels, easily the highest level in 174 years of record keeping.

According to the WMO, ocean temperatures hit their highest point in 65 years, with over 90% of the world’s waters experiencing heatwave conditions at some point in the year, reports RTE.

This negatively impacted food chains.

“The WMO community is sounding the red alert to the world,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, reports RTE.

“What we witnessed in 2023, especially with the unprecedented ocean warmth, glacier retreat and Antarctic sea ice loss, is cause for particular concern,” Celeste Saulo added, reports RTE.
