The UN’s Refugee Agency has appealed to protesters who oppose asylum-seeker accommodation in their area, to consider the impact their actions may have, reports RTE.

This is due to the increasing number of International Protection Applicants who do not have State-provided shelter, which has reached a record high.

The UNHCR and the Irish Refugee Council have raised concerns about the impact on those who are sleeping rough, especially with a low-temperature ice warning in place, reports RTE.

For the first time since the introduction of Direct Provision in March 2000, the number of new asylum seekers without State-provided shelter has surpassed 600.

It is a significant milestone that has been reached just six weeks after the State stopped offering accommodation to all eligible new arrivals on 4 December, due to a severe shortage of space, reports RTE.
