Uproar on social media as 337 provisional drivers had their car seized in the last six weeks

There’s been uproar on social media all week after it emerged that gardai have seized 337 cars since December 22nd 2018 belonging to unaccompanied provisional drivers.

According to RTÉ News, a total of 337 vehicles have been seized by Gardaí since December 22nd 2018 and February 10th 2019.

The seizures come following the introduction of strict new laws that give Gardai the power to seize vehicles of a learner driver is driving a vehicle unaccompanied.

Over the past few weeks Gardaí have highlighted the new Clancy Amendment act by warning drivers that they would be punished if they are caught driving unaccompanied.

They also say vehicle owners will also be punished if they allow those who are on learner permits drive their vehicle unaccompanied.

Under the new laws vehicle owners could face hefty fines or a prison sentence.

Many people feel this is extremely unfair, specially on young drivers who need a car for work or college.
