An urgent recall has been issued for a brand of cheese sold in Lidl due to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland warned consumers on Friday that a batch of Deluxe Spanish Castellano Sheeps’ Cheese sold in Lidl was being recalled as it contained the harmful disease-causing bacterium, reports The Mirror.

In healthy people, symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection can include mild flu-like symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

However, in people who are more vulnerable, the infection can be severe and can lead to serious complications, reports The Mirror.

People who are more vulnerable to Listeria monocytogenes infections include pregnant women, infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

The incubation period — the time between initial infection and the first symptoms appearing — is on average three weeks but can range between three and 70 days, reports The Mirror.

The recalled cheese is the Deluxe Spanish Castellano Sheeps’ Cheese in a 150 gram pack size, with batch code 100534252, a use-by date of 08/11/2026 and a country of origin of Spain.

Consumers who have purchased this product are advised not to eat it and to return it to the store from which it was purchased, reports The Mirror.
