Urgent recall issued for popular Tesco food as shoppers warned ‘not to eat it after Christmas Eve’

An urgent alert has been issued to shoppers in Ireland after a recall notice was announced for a well-known snack sold in supermarkets nationwide due to potential health concerns.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) confirmed on Friday that an urgent recall has been put in place for specific batches of The Galway Kitchen Classic Houmous as they “may pose a microbiological risk”, reports The Mirror.

The Mediterranean-style dip is a popular choice for cheese boards and is stocked in Tesco stores across Ireland, where it is sold for €1.20.

The FSAI said that certain batches of the product are being removed from sale because of an incorrect use-by date being applied, reports The Mirror.

The affected product is The Galway Kitchen Classic Houmous in a 200g pack, which carries an incorrect use-by date of 19/01/2026.

Consumers who have the impacted batch at home have been advised not to eat it after Christmas Eve, reports The Mirror.

An FSAI spokesperson said: “The above batch of The Galway Kitchen Classic Houmous is being recalled due to an incorrect use-by date. If consumed after the 24th of December 2025, this may pose a microbiological risk which may make the batch unsafe to eat. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale”, reports The Mirror.

All affected packets have since been taken off sale, with recall notices being displayed at points of purchase.

This most recent recall follows the removal of several batches of Irish quail eggs from shelves after salmonella was detected, reports The Mirror.

On Thursday, the FSAI issued a “do not eat” warning for particular batches of Quail.ie Always Fresh 20 Quail Eggs.

Quail.ie’s website states that it supplies quail eggs to “shops and butchers in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and beyond”, reports The Mirror.

The recall was initiated after salmonella was found, a bacteria that can lead to gastrointestinal illness and, in some cases, more serious health complications.

The recall covers all best before dates up to and including January 10, 2026. The FSAI said: “Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batches.”
