The United States has now granted Chinese tech firm Huawei a temporary licence so the company can purchase American equipment to maintain existing networks. Huawei is still banned from acquiring equipment for new developments.
Huawei provides a lot of -and in many cases, all of it- networking equipment to smaller internet providers in rural America. An outright ban would mean that Huawei could no longer update or maintain all these devices, which would spell disaster for a lot of American businesses and existing customers.
The so-called Temporary General License provides a 90-day period so that internet providers and any other firm using Huawei equipment can make alternative arrangements with other manufacturers.
