US Senate votes in favour of raising minimum age to buy cigarettes from 18 to 21

The US Senate has voted overwhelmingly in favour of prohibiting the sale of cigarettes and e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21.

In a move to combat the rise in young smokers, Congress voted in favour of raising the minimum age from 18 to 21.

Although 19 states had previously raised the age limit before the vote, the passing of the latest Bill will now mean those aged between 18 and 21 will no longer be able to purchase tobacco or e-cigarette products from next year.

It is believed that the US Government is looking to crack down on the sale of cigarettes to young people which has seen a sharp rise in recent years.
