Tánaiste Leo Varadkar is in self-isolation following a positive antigen test, his spokesman has confirmed.
He is one of several cabinet members to test positive recently amid a surge in Covid. Taosieach Micheál Martin had to cancel a meeting with the US President last week after testing positive in Washington. In the meantime he flew to Brussels after the isolation.
The news comes as concerns have been raised about any action being taken to reduce the time people have to self-isolate if they test positive for Covid-19 due to pressure on the workforce.
Shortening the seven-day isolation period could result in more people becoming infected, Kingston Mills, professor of experimental immunology, warned on radio RTÉ Morning Ireland.
