The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has revealed that the Government is open to the idea of scrapping its controversial Communications Unit following calls from opposition parties.
It is thought that Mr Varadkar who was speaking on RTE Radio One this week, is willing to review the future of the unit which costs in the region of €5m to operate.
The unit which is tasked to handle advertising campaigns, has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks after a number of opposition TDs criticised it’s handling of the recent Project Ireland 2040 campaign.
In recent weeks a number of opposition TD’s have criticised the unit’s operations after a number of regional newspaper’s were asked to publish articles outlining Fine Gael’s proposals for Ireland over the next 20+ years.
The campaign which has already become the centre of a Dail debate, was described as nothing more than a PR stunt for Fine Gael.
Those claims have since been refuted by Fine Gael who say the objective of the campaign was to inform the people of Ireland about upcoming projects in their area and not to further boost the parties popularity.
However on Monday, Mr Varadkar said that he and the Government would review the unit, saying the unit was purposely set up to explain the work of the Government. But now unfortunately it has become nothing but a distraction to the work carried out by the Government.
