Virgin Media and O2 to merge and form new £31.4bn company

Broadband and mobile operators Virgin Media and O2 have announced a merger worth £31.4bn.

According to spokespeople for the business, the move will ‘speed up the rollout of faster broadband and 5G networks’ across the UK.

The new ‘super-group’ would pose an immediate threat to smaller phone and internet providers, so competition authorities are now set to pore over the details of the merger and consider its implications for other companies.
