Home and business owners who have seen an increase in callouts for cockroach infestations throughout the summer months have been cautioned to be mindful of the increased number of cockroach sightings, reports Independent.
Usually found in warm, dark areas such under sinks, behind cabinets, and behind equipment like refrigerators and stoves, cockroaches hide in groups.
The public has been alerted to the potential role that pests play as disease vectors, including salmonella, diarrhoea, and gastroenteritis, by the pest management company Rentokil, reports Independent.
There is additional evidence linking exposure to cockroach droppings, saliva, and the body parts they shed during moulting to increases in eczema, asthma, and allergies.
According to Colm Moore, Technical Area Manager of Rentokil, cockroaches leave behind “saliva, faeces, and body parts” in the areas they occupy.
“These remnants contain specific proteins that act as allergens, potentially leading to blocked sinuses, ear and sinus infections, eye irritation, and a persistent cough. Cockroaches are extremely resilient insects and breed rapidly, making professional treatment essential to control any infestation”, reports Independent.
Since cockroaches are hard to find in a person’s house or place of business, many people mistake the symptoms they produce for a cold.
The following actions should be taken, according to Rentokil, to help prevent or get rid of cockroaches in your home or place of work.
Remove all food sources; individuals shouldn’t leave food on countertops or fluids in buckets or sinks. Dry food should be kept in firmly sealed containers, reports Independent.
Empty trash cans on a regular basis and rinse food or drink containers before putting them in the recycling bin.
Make sure that the premises are thoroughly cleaned and cleared of any food or liquid debris. Before dusk, empty the litter, water, and food trays for pets, reports Independent.
