Watch the skies tonight for the first of three Supermoons this year

supermoon

Insomniacs and stargazers are in for a treat tonight, as the moon will appear fuller and brighter than usual.

The phenomenon known as the Supermoon occurs because the orbit of Earth’s one and only satellite has brought it closer to us.

Tonight’s full moon will be just 222,631 miles from earth, which is one of the closest approaches of the year.

Much of the south and north west of Ireland is currently overcast, but if you live in the midlands or east, you might be in luck.

The next Supermoons will occur on 28 September and 27 October.
