“We need to stop racism” – Another government quango to “research” anti-migration sentiment in Irish society

In a recent twitter post by the Immigrant Council NGO, the group highlighted their partnership with a government agency called The Irish Research Council.

The partnership between the two quangos revolves around a “research” project to examine “anti-migration sentiment in Irish society”.

The immigrant Council are looking for participants to complete a 15 min online survey that will inform much of the Irish Research council’s project findings.

The online survey highlights their definition of an immigrant;

“By “immigrants” we mean persons coming to Ireland from another country for the purposes of working or living.”

The survey asks if the participant is a migrant in Ireland or a Native in Ireland. Depending on your choice on this question, immigrants and Irish natives are served different questions. Irish natives are asked for their views of immigrants whilst immigrants are asked about their skills, work experience and career paths.

One Twitter user replied to the Immigrant Council post promoting the survey:

“The title of your survey (Anti-Migration sentiment in Irish Society) is showing your bias already. How do you think you’ll get honest answers?”

This study is conducted through Technological University Dublin, University College Dublin and the ADAPT researchers, in collaboration with the Immigrant Council of Ireland, funded through the Irish Research Council COALESCE research fund.

An interesting question asked of Irish natives groups asylum seekers and refugees together and assumes they are both persecuted. The question does not differentiate between asylum seekers, refugees and programme refugees.
