We want more holidays – Teachers Union want Minister for Education to allow kids and teachers get off earlier for Christmas holidays

The Teachers Union of Ireland wants their teachers and schoolkids attached to their teachers to get off sooner than expected for this year’s Christmas holidays.

The Union claims that teachers have had a very hard year and they deserve more time off.

It’s understood that the Minister for Education Norma Foley has said that there are currently no plans to extend the Christmas school break, with demands reportedly for a day and a half early.

Foley, who was addressing an Oireachtas Committee on said that her Department, said that she has no plans to extend the break despite calls from the TUI and others.

The Education Minister who also said that her Department was following public health advice, also told the committee that she is conscious by the fact that students had already missed a number of days this year and was keen to avoid another scenario.

It is understood that Foley’s comments come after it was put forward that children finish on Friday December 18th rather than Tuesday December 22nd.

The call came as many believe that it would beneficial that students and teachers restricted their movements sooner before Christmas.
