The US Department of Justice has filed new criminal charges against President Joe Biden’s son Hunter, accusing him of failing to pay $1.4 million (€1.2 million) in taxes while spending millions on a lavish lifestyle, reports RTE.
According to the complaint filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, the Justice Department brought three felony and six tax offences against Hunter Biden.
If convicted, the 53-year-old faces up to 17 years in prison. The Justice Department said an investigation into Biden is ongoing.
“The defendant engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4m in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019,” the indictment read, reports RTE.
It added that he instead spent large sums on “on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature,” including over $70,000 (€64,000) on drug rehabilitation, reports RTE.
Biden’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The White House declined to comment. It was unclear when Biden would appear in court.
