After many fatalities on the roads over the weekend, Taoiseach Simon Harris said that we are now at a “critical juncture” in terms of road fatalities, reports RTE.
A man in his 20s perished in a single-vehicle crash in Co Meath, while two other men perished in a three-vehicle incident.
A 40-year-old man lost his life in a car crash in County Cork on Saturday morning, while a youngster perished in an e-scooter and car incident in Co Kilkenny on Saturday night.
Yesterday, a 50-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a collision in Co Down, reports RTE.
The Taoiseach called the losses “devastating” and offered his sympathies to the surviving loved ones.
According to him, Ireland has achieved “significant progress” in the past several years in lowering the number of fatalities on Irish roads, but that progress is currently “at risk”.
“These are not statistics, they are lost lives and shattered families,” said Mr. Harris, reports RTE.
We are currently in a crucial situation. As individuals, as communities, and as a nation, we must act to buck the trend and stop the loss of additional lives.
“Government will play its part and will take the necessary steps, but we need the help of every driver across the country.”
The Taoiseach advised drivers to calm down, put down their cell phones, and never use drugs or alcohol before getting behind the wheel ahead of the August bank holiday weekend, reports RTE.
