The Taoiseach has stated that the Government must prepare for population expansion in a “better job,” reports Breaking News.
The number of immigrants to Ireland in the year ending in April approached 150,000, the most in 17 years.
In the three months that followed, almost 100,000 individuals relocated to Ireland.
Of these, 30,000 were Irish people going back home, 27,000 were other EU citizens, and 5,400 were UK citizens, according to the most recent statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The remaining 86,800 immigrants were foreign nationals, including those from Ukraine, reports Breaking News.
According to the latest data, Ireland’s population increased by 98,700, marking the most annual growth since 2008.
In the year ending in April 2024, there were more immigrants than at any other time since 2007.

“There’s no doubt the Government that I lead will now need to do a better job in terms of forward planning, preparing for population growth, wondering what that means for public services, what that means for investment, what that means for staffing levels. But we need to be very clear that actually the growth that we’re seeing in our population, much of that growth are actually people coming to assist our country – either Irish people coming back home, maybe after a number of years abroad, maybe coming back home to a job or to have a family or to care for a relative, and also people coming to Ireland to work in job vacancies that haven’t been able to be filled within Ireland,” speaking in Paris on Tuesday, Taoiseach Simon Harris said, reports Breaking News.
There are now 5.38 million people living in the nation.
Taoiseach Simon Harris stated in a speech in Paris on Tuesday that immigration inward is a “good thing,” but he also cautioned that other procedures would need to be developed in order to deal with the population increase.
According to the data, 69,000 fewer persons departed the nation in the 12 months leading up to April 2024 than did so in the same period in 2023 (64,000). Since 2015, this is the largest emigration total, reports Breaking News.
19,400 additional persons were added to the population naturally, with 34,800 deaths and 54,200 births.
Australia saw a significant increase in the number of persons leaving Ireland to go there as well; 10,600 people are thought to have left Ireland for Australia, up 4,700 from the previous year, reports Breaking News.
