Thousands of WhatsApp users across the country have been warned of a new scam.
Gardai have urged users if the popular messaging app not to open or download any messages with the label ‘Martineilli’.
According to The Limerick Leader newspaper Gardai have said thousands of users are at risk of having their phone hacked if they open the message.
One senior Garda official told the paper that the sophisticated malware can’t not be removed from the phone once the message is opened.
