WHO expert says Ireland may need local lockdowns to stem the spread of Covid-19 Indian variant

Ireland might have to re-impose local lockdowns due to the threat of the Indian coronavirus variant, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson.

The strain has seen a meteoric rise in infection rates, reaching over 3,400 in the UK. There have been 59 confirmed cases of the strain in Ireland so far.

But according to the WHO, the Indian strain is likely to spread further across Ireland, which might force the Government to re-impose lockdowns at a local level in the best-case scenario, and national at worst.
