Will you get it? WHO wants manufacturers to increase MPox vaccine production

To stop the spread of a more severe form of the virus, the World Health Organisation advised vaccine producers to increase manufacturing of mpox vaccinations, reports RTE.

The number of Clade 1b cases of mpox surged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and moved outside of it, prompting the WHO to declare the outbreak a public health emergency of worldwide concern on Wednesday, its highest alert level.

A WHO spokesperson, Margaret Harris, told reporters, “We do need the manufacturers to really scale up so that we’ve got access to many, many more vaccines.”

Countries with vaccine stocks for mpox are being urged by the WHO to contribute them to those experiencing active outbreaks, reports RTE.

In recent years, two mpox vaccines have been used: Japan’s LC16 and Denmark’s MVA-BN, manufactured by pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic.

According to Ms. Harris, there were 500,000 MVA-BN doses on hand, and 2.4 million more could be generated fast with a buyer’s commitment.

If a formal purchase request is made, an extra 10 million doses might be provided for 2025, reports RTE.

“LC16 is a vaccination that is made for the Japanese government but is not commercialised. This vaccine is well stocked,” Ms. Harris continued, adding that the WHO was collaborating with Tokyo to enable donations.

nations who have vaccine stockpiles but no outbreaks “must donate as many doses as possible” to afflicted African nations, according to the nonprofit organisation Doctors Without Borders.

It said that MVA-BN was too expensive for the majority of nations where mpox is a problem and requested Bavarian Nordic to reduce its rates, reports RTE.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the chief of the WHO, is scheduled to provide provisional advice to nations on how to manage the mpox outbreak.

The virus has two subtypes: Clade 1, which is endemic in the Congo Basin in central Africa and is more deadly and virulent than the other, and Clade 2, which is endemic in West Africa.

Mr. Tedros informed the Standing Committee on Health Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response of the UN health agency on Thursday that the DRC rise is being driven by breakouts of two distinct Clade 1 strains, reports RTE.

The first is an outbreak of what was once known as Clade 1, but is now known as Clade 1a, in the northwest DRC. He claimed there are several ways for this pandemic to propagate and that it mostly affects children.

The second is a recent Clade 1b branch in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was discovered in September of last year and is expanding quickly, mostly through adult sexual transmission.

The WHO issued its highest alert mostly due to the spread of Clade 1b and its discovery in surrounding nations.

“It’s a complex picture, and responding to each of these outbreaks, and bringing them under control, will require a complex, comprehensive and coordinated international response,” said Tedros, reports RTE.
