The Pentagon has confirmed it will pull thousands of US troops from Iraq, with a similar decision anticipated for Afghanistan, RT reports.
The recent decision will see troop numbers reduced from 5200 to 3000, with one US general saying the move acknowledges the ‘great progress’ made by Iraq’s own army who are battling Islamic extremists in the war torn country.
The move has been anticipated for some time, with President Donald Trump maintaining his policy of reducing overseas US military activity. Recently he sent shockwaves through America’s military elites, accusing senior defense officials of colluding with arms companies to prolong ‘endless wars’.
Some analysts have said the move may also be a result of strained US-Iraq relations sparked by the bombing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad, in which a senior Iraqi official was also killed.
