Withdrawal of funding for UN relief could be ‘catastrophic’, warns Tánaiste

The Irish Tánaiste has expressed concerns over the suspension of funding for UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza, reports Breaking News.

He stated that the move could have catastrophic effects and he plans to discuss the issue with other countries.

Micheál Martin emphasized that the UNRWA is an essential organization and that removing funding during the Israeli offensive in Gaza would be devastating.

While he acknowledged the allegations relating to agency employees, he believes there needs to be a sense of perspective about the number of employees involved, reports Breaking News.

Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA chief, confirmed that contracts with several employees have been terminated and an investigation has been ordered after Israel provided information alleging their involvement in the Hamas attack on October 7th.

The US State Department has stated that the allegations relate to 12 employees.

Several countries including the UK, US, Australia, Italy and Canada have temporarily paused funding for UNRWA, which is playing a central role in providing aid for Gazans amid the Israeli offensive in the enclave, reports Breaking News.
