Woman aged in her 60s sadly dies after trying to save dog stuck in sea as man ‘critical’ in hospital

A woman in her 60s has died and a man of the same age is fighting for his life in hospital after the couple entered the sea in an attempt to rescue their pet dog which had become trapped in the water.

Lancashire Police confirmed the incident took place at Rossall Beach in Thornton Cleveleys, with emergency services alerted at 8.31pm after the ambulance service reported two individuals had been pulled from the water by coastguard crews, reports The Mirror.

The couple had gotten into difficulty after wading into the sea to reach their stranded dog near the Fleetwood Beach Café.

HM Coastguard Fleetwood reached the pair shortly after 8.30pm and brought them ashore, where emergency responders administered immediate medical treatment at the scene, reports The Mirror.

Despite the efforts of emergency crews, the woman was later pronounced dead at hospital.

Police confirmed that the man, also in his 60s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. Enquiries to identify the woman’s next of kin are described as ongoing, reports The Mirror.

Officers confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The dog was recovered safe and well. The incident has prompted renewed warnings about the dangers of entering open water, particularly in emergency situations where conditions can quickly become unpredictable and hazardous, reports The Mirror.
