A woman in her 40s is in a critical condition in hospital today, after getting into difficulties while swimming in Athlone late on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and pulled the woman from the water alive.
She was transferred to University Hospital Galway, where she remains in a critical condition.
