Public Servants who wish to work until the age of 70 now can do so after President Michael D Higgins signed a new legislation into law today.
Under the new legislation which was approved last week, those working in public sector jobs will no longer have to retire at the age of 66.
Although some exceptions were made under the previous legislation, those working in the sector can now apply for five more years if they wish to do so.
It is believed that unions representing public sector workers lobbied for an increase as many working in the industry felt it was unfair especially incases of financial restraints.
