Tom Wolfe, author of best selling books like Bonfire of Vanities and The Right Stuff, has passed away aged 87.

Wolfe was as well known both for his non-fiction work as for his novels, in which he often painted a vitriolic picture of people’s pretentious nature and other human traits.

His biggest hit, Bonfire of Vanities, was published in 1987. Bonfire… depicted the excesses of New York in the 1980s through a series of characters obsessed with greed and money.

Wolfe would go on to write 17 books – 13 works of nonfiction and four novels.

The writer’s agent confirmed that Wolfe passed away in hospital on Monday, after a brief illness.
