World War 3? Fears of war in Middle East as tensions mount

Tensions in the Middle East are at boiling point after Israel conducted air strikes on Iranian backed Shi’ite militias in Syria in response to what it claims were attempted rocket strikes on Israel.

The strikes which are said to have resulted in dozens of casualties and follows a sporadic series over deadly Israeli strikes on Iranian Revolutionary Guard positions in Syria and Iraq as well as on the militias they support such as Iraqi Hezbollah.

Israel also conducted strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon last week and has warned Hamas in Gaza that any more attacks on its territory from the enclave would result in a general war to destroy the organisation and its allies.

This all comes amid continued tensions between Israel, the US and Saudi Arabia and Iran. Iranian backed Houthi forces in Yemen continue to resist Saudi military intervention and have been regularly launching missile strikes on Saudi military bases and have targeted the Kingdom’s capital.

The threat of a general regional war in the region comes as the Syrian Civil War winds down with the victory of the Russian and Iranian backed Assad government.
