‘You were outstanding’ – Messages get revealed which Martin received after meeting Trump on St Patrick’s Day

The majority of messages sent to Taoiseach Micheál Martin following his St Patrick’s Day meeting with US President Donald Trump were complimentary, with members of the public praising his performance in the Oval Office, reports Breaking News.

The messages, seen by BreakingNews.ie following a Freedom of Information request, show that Martin received widespread public support for how he conducted himself during a meeting that was widely watched and analysed, reports Breaking News.

On the evening of St Patrick’s Day, one person thanked Martin for his “professionalism and dignity,” adding: “I would like to sincerely thank Taoiseach Micheál Martin for his recent visit to the White House and for representing Ireland with such professionalism and dignity.

The relationship between Ireland and the United States is incredibly important — not only culturally, but also economically — and his presence there underscored just how vital that connection remains.”

“I appreciate that the visit may not have been without its challenges or criticism, but I firmly believe it was the right decision and made in the best interests of the Irish people,” the message continued, reports Breaking News.

“It was reassuring to see Ireland represented so thoughtfully and confidently on such an important stage.

I am genuinely proud and grateful for the leadership shown, and I believe many people recognise the long-term importance of maintaining and strengthening this relationship.

Thank you again for representing Ireland so well.”

In another email on 18 March, one member of the public wrote: “I’m not generally a political person, but I followed your St Patrick’s Day visit to the White House, in the hope that all would go well. I feared that in the current climate, President Trump would have made things hard,” reports Breaking News.

Another message read: “A great performance all round on behalf of our country,” reports Breaking News.

A further correspondent wrote: “Though I don’t support parties anymore, I have to be fair in saying that you did an excellent job in the Oval Office with Mr Trump yesterday,” reports Breaking News.

Martin had stood up to the diplomatic test by pushing back on Trump’s criticism of migration into the EU and also defended UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during the Oval Office meeting, reports Breaking News.
