According to US President Donald Trump, Ukraine is unlikely to regain all of its territory and joining NATO is not a realistic option, reports RTE.
In his first significant move towards diplomacy in a conflict he has pledged to stop, US President Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin over the phone Thursday afternoon.
According to Mr. Trump, he and Putin hope to meet again, most likely in Saudi Arabia, reports RTE.
According to Mr. Trump, his talk with Putin lasted more than an hour and was a wonderful conversation. He told reporters as much Wednesday afternoon.
The Kremlin claimed that Mr. Putin’s phone conversation with Mr. Trump lasted about an hour and a half, while Mr. Zelensky’s office stated that Trump and Mr. Zelensky chatted on the phone for around an hour, reports RTE.
The US president was asked to visit Moscow, according to the Kremlin, and Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin had agreed to meet.
According to Russian sources, there had been conjecture that the two presidents might meet in a third nation, considering Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as potential locations.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Mr. Trump called the chat “lengthy and highly productive” and stated that the two leaders had even decided to travel to each other’s countries to discuss the intense tensions that have existed since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, reports RTE.
According to a second statement from the Kremlin, the roughly one-and-a-half-hour call concluded with Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin agreeing that the “time has come to work together,” and that a lasting solution to the conflict in Ukraine is within reach.
“I just had a lengthy and highly productive phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia,” Mr Trump said, adding that they had discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, artificial intelligence and other subjects, reports RTE.
He said that they both agreed that “we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the war with Russia/Ukraine”—a claim that Trump made on the number of people killed in the conflict in Ukraine that has not been verified.
“We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s nations,” said Mr Trump, reports RTE.
“We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately” on Ukraine, reports RTE.
