In response to a significant drone and missile strike that occurred overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated today that his country needed long-range weaponry to defend its towns and front-line troops against Russian bombs and drones, reports RTE.
Russia attempted its sixth drone strike on Kyiv in as many weeks overnight, but before they could reach the city, Ukraine’s air defence systems destroyed all of their weaponry, according to the country’s military.
35 of the 39 drones and two cruise missiles that Russia had launched overnight were destroyed, according to the Ukrainian air force, which made the announcement on Telegram. Ten regions in Ukraine were the target of the munitions, according to the air force, reports RTE.
The number of drones fired towards Kiev was not immediately known. The commander of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital, Serhiy Popko, stated on Telegram that no major damage or injuries had been recorded.
“During last night alone, the Russian army used almost 40 ‘Shaheds’ against Ukraine. Importantly, most of them were shot down by our defenders of the sky,” Mr Zelensky said on Telegram, referring to the drones, reports RTE.
“Our sufficient long-range capabilities should be a fair response to Russian terror. Everyone who supports us in this supports the defence against terror,” Mr Zelensky said, reports RTE.
