Storm Desmond has hit the Bandon area in Cork particularly hard, leaving behind a trail of desolation and devastation.
Both residents and business owners are today beginning to assess the financial disaster inflicted upon them by the storm, and indirectly, by those who failed to deliver on their promises to erect effective flood defences.
The same area experienced similarly disastrous flooding back in 2009. At that time, 200 properties were left damaged, causing substantial financial loss to owners and traders alike. Six years on, no flood defence system has been put in place.
Today, local residents are once again calling for proper infrastructure to stem flood waters away from the town.
