Beam me up Scottie: Kirk and crew are back for Star Trek Beyond

Chris Pine is back as Captain James T Kirk for the third time in ‘Star Trek Beyond’ which is out later this year but fans still fear the worst after the official trailer aired last year.

Stranded on a hostile planet, Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise crew face an alien threat in the new film that is the first one without JJ Abrams at the helm.

The director this time is Justin Lin who has faced criticism after the trailer was aired. He directed seven ‘Fast and the Furious’ films and it was felt that the new Star Trek was like an offshoot of the ‘fast cars’ franchise.

“With trailers you’re putting a two-hour movie into a minute and a half, and the one thing I wanted to make sure of is that it hopefully represents that we are trying to be bold and take risks, whether we are successful or not, I don’t know,” the director told the press at a meeting in Paramount Studios.

The disappointment at the trailer led star Simon Pegg who plays Scotty to appeal to fans to have faith. He helped pen the story so we can only hope that the self confessed geek knows what he is talking about.

Back for more action as the Enterprise crew is Karl Urban (Bones); Zachary Quinto (Spock), Anton Yelchin (Chekov): John Cho (Sulu) and Zoe Saldana (Uhuru). Idris Elba is playing bad guy Krall.

I have to side with the fans who are expecting the film to be a disaster. When the rebooted Star Trek came out in 2009 out I expected the worst and was left pleasantly surprised at the approach and how well it gelled.

Then Star Trek Into Darkness hit our screens in 2013 and treated us to Benedict Cumberbatch as the bad guy (spoiler alert) Khan. Robocop star Peter Weller was also aboard as Marcus.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quint I felt were cast perfectly as the characters played originally by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. However Karl Urban I felt was miscast as Dr Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy who was originally played by DeForest Kelley.

The trailer makes the new film look dreadful and almost looks more mockery like ‘Galaxy Quest’ due to the terrible look of some of the aliens in it. We may all be looking for JJ Abrams to come back from a galaxy far, far away to direct the next one.
