The cold snap is set to continue into the weekend, with dry but freezing conditions predominant over the next 72 hours.
The chief culprits are two Atlantic weather fronts currently pushing cold air over Ireland. Temperatures will dip throughout today and tomorrow, giving way to ice and frost formation overnight.
Fog banks are also likely, specially inland and across river valleys.
The coming weekend is expected to be bitterly cold, with snow and sleet showers likely in parts of Munster.
Early predictions for next week forecast blustery but milder weather ahead.
